SUCCESS STORIES

Crisp County 4-H Club

Crisp County 4-H'er, Kathryn Leigh Buford, began the “PJs and Ponies” project when she discovered that there were 98 foster children in her hometown of Cordele , GA. She was shocked as she discovered these children are often taken from their homes with just the clothes on their backs. She founded and served as the youth leader of “PJs and Ponies” because she wanted to make a difference in the lives of the foster children and those associated with them.

She involved the entire Crisp County 4-H Club, extension staff, local businesses, civic clubs, news media, adult volunteers. and friends to make the project a success. Kathryn Leigh and others joined together to clean up, update furniture, and paint murals on the walls at the Department of Family and Children Services visitation center. They also gave pajamas and 4-H stuffed ponies as gifts to children who were placed in foster care. Funding from a Wal-Mart grant was used to purchase a flat screen television, pony-themed DVDs, and a baby crib for the newly renovated visitation center. Wal-Mart funding was also used to purchase additional pajama gift cards for the foster children. In the near future, 4-H overnight bags will be given to the center for distribution to foster children.

Kathryn Leigh and the Crisp County 4-H'ers learned that when people give of their time and efforts, it can truly make a difference in the lives of others. They also learned that one person's idea can become a reality when others volunteer to help them.
